Columns in bads: top-to-bottom vs left-to-right

I know (see manual) that a page can be divided in columns where a top-to-bottom approach is being used (which works great, but only on the main report, not subreports).
Ie:

1  5  9
2  6  10
3  7  11
4  8  12

I also read that columns in bands only go from left-to-right.

1  2  3
4  5  6
7  8  9
10 11 12

I'd like to use top-to-bottom in a band, is there a way/trick to achieve top-to-bottom in a band?
