large reports hang in asp

I can run reports just fine in designer -- even large ones (20 K records) -- in just seconds (say 20 seconds). However, when saving the design file (.fr3) and use it in an asp page then the page just hangs forever. Any ideas how to debug this?

note, in case you didn't get it. The same fr3 file works just fine on smaller recordsets (<1000 records)
