Charts and hierarchical object data

Is it possible to have a Chart work off the second level of a hierarchical object source? I tried this, and while the Chart accepted Data1.Data2 as the Datasource, when I run the report the Chart is blank. If I run the chart (with modified data settings) for Data1 it works fine.
