I found that tricky with cross tab reports.
The easiest solution for me was to sort the data before sending it to FR.
I set up the SQL to get the data, sort it the way I wanted it and then show it in a cross tab.
When I later made the report dynamic, able to be sorted in different ways, what I was really doing was accessing the data again, sorting by a different field and then opening the cross tab report again with the new data.
